What is a high-reach excavator?

A high-reach excavator is a tracked or wheeled machine fitted with an elongated boom and stick assembly that extends well above a standard excavator's maximum reach. These machines typically reach 80 to 120+ feet vertically, depending on the model and configuration, making them essential for demolishing mid-rise and tall structures from ground level alone.

The extended boom allows operators to work at height without cranes, aerial lifts, or multiple stages of work. A grapple, shear, or pulverizer attachment at the end of the arm handles concrete, steel, and structural components. This makes high-reach excavators particularly valuable for deconstructing commercial buildings, parking structures, and industrial facilities in constrained urban sites where placing heavy equipment above ground is impractical or impossible.

Because of their reach and single-machine efficiency, high-reach excavators reduce project duration and often lower overall demolition costs. They also improve safety by eliminating worker exposure to extreme heights and reducing coordination between multiple equipment types. Operators control the work precisely from the ground cab, managing debris fall and dust migration more effectively than tower-based methods.

In Ontario, high-reach excavators are rented or deployed by commercial and industrial demolition contractors for jobs where standard equipment cannot reach or where site constraints demand a compact footprint. Fuel consumption and operating costs are higher than conventional excavators, but the speed and safety gains often justify the investment for tall-structure jobs.
