What is non-friable asbestos?
Non-friable asbestos is asbestos bound tightly within a matrix material that resists disintegration and does not readily release fibers when handled normally, requiring Type 2 or Type 3 removal classification in Ontario.
Non-friable asbestos is asbestos material firmly bound within a solid matrix, such as cement, vinyl, or roofing compounds. Unlike friable asbestos (which crumbles easily and releases fibers into the air), non-friable material remains intact under normal handling and does not shed particles without significant disturbance or deliberate cutting and grinding.
In Ontario's regulatory framework, non-friable asbestos typically falls under Type 2 or Type 3 removal classifications. Type 2 work applies to most non-friable materials and does not require a licensed asbestos contractor, though proper procedures must still be followed. Type 3 work applies to large-scale non-friable removal and requires a licensed professional. Both differ markedly from Type 1 work, which covers friable asbestos and demands the highest level of containment, air monitoring, and certified worker training.
