What is shoring?
Shoring is a temporary support structure installed to hold back soil and prevent cave-in during trenching, excavation, or foundation work.
Shoring refers to temporary bracing systems that stabilize soil and prevent collapse when excavating trenches, foundations, or underground work areas. These systems hold back the surrounding earth during active digging and allow workers to operate safely below ground level without the trench walls caving inward.
Shoring takes several forms depending on site conditions and depth. Common methods include timber posts and beams, steel sheets or "soldier piles" driven into the ground, hydraulic braces, and pre-cast or sheet piling. The choice depends on soil type, water table conditions, trench width, and how long the excavation will remain open. Shallow trenches for utilities may use simple cross-bracing, while deeper foundation excavations require engineered systems designed by structural engineers.
This work is essential for public safety and regulatory compliance. Ontario construction codes and the Occupational Health and Safety Act require proper shoring whenever soil conditions or depth create collapse risk. Inadequate or failed shoring leads to cave-ins, one of the most serious hazards on construction and demolition sites. Licensed contractors who handle excavation and site clearing typically install and maintain shoring systems as part of their standard scope.
Shoring remains in place until backfill is complete or the permanent structure (like a basement wall) takes its load. Removal requires the same care as installation to avoid ground movement or settling.
