What is soil compaction?

Soil compaction is the process of mechanically densifying soil by removing air voids to increase its load-bearing strength and stability for building and infrastructure projects.

Soil compaction involves pressing down loose earth to remove air pockets and increase its density and bearing capacity. This mechanical process is critical when constructing on fill material, which often arrives at a site in a loose, unstable state. Without proper compaction, fill soil can settle unpredictably over time, causing structural damage to buildings and other infrastructure.

Contractors use various pieces of equipment depending on soil type, site conditions, and project depth. Vibratory rollers work well for granular soils over large areas, while plate compactors are suited to confined spaces and tighter fills. For deeper compaction or clay-based materials, jumping rammers and drum rollers may be specified. The goal is to achieve a target density and moisture content that meets engineering specifications for the intended load.

Building and site development projects in Ontario require fill material to be compacted in lifts (layers) to proper standards before concrete slabs, foundations, or pavement can be placed. Inadequate compaction increases risk of settlement, cracking, and structural failure. Engineers and municipality inspectors typically require testing and documentation of compaction work to verify that each lift meets the required density percentage, often 95% or higher of maximum standard compaction. Excavation and site clearing contractors frequently perform or oversee soil compaction as part of site preparation, working from grading plans and soil reports to ensure the base is ready for construction.
